Established in New York City in 1881, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) functions as the national governing body for tennis in America. The organization seeks to promote continued growth of the sport and the development of players, with an overriding mission of facilitating national success at the highest levels of the sport. The organization has provided support to the nation’s most successful tennis pros.

The most successful male tennis player to come out of the United States is Pete Sampras. A 2007 Tennis Hall of Fame inductee, Sampras turned pro in 1988 and retired in 2002. He won the first of his 14 major titles at the 1990 US Open. His final major win also came in New York, where his victory over rival and countryman Andre Agassi proved to be the last match of his career. His 14 major titles stood as a record for male tennis players for nearly 7 years.

Andy Roddick is the most recent male Grand Slam winner from the United States. He is also the most recent homegrown major winner, claiming the US Open title over Juan Carlos Ferrero the year after Sampras’ retirement.

On the women’s side, Serena Williams is not only the most successful American tennis player, but also the winningest player at major tournaments in the history of the Open Era. She has won 23 major tournaments, along with 10 additional major finals appearances.

The most recent American winner of the US Open emerged from the 2017 women’s bracket. In fact, the final featured two Americans: number 15 seed Madison Keys and unseeded Sloane Stephens. Stephens won the match in convincing fashion, 6-3, 6-0.
