Active in her professional community, Dyan Gershman is a longstanding member of the New York City Bar Association (NYCBA). In June 2023, the NYCBA held the industry-focused conference “Buses & the City: The Future of the Motor Coach Industry.”

Bringing together various participants, including urban planners and transportation executives, policy makers, attorneys, and academics, the event forwarded solutions to complex mobility services issues. These concerns span affordability, safety, efficiency, and sustainability, as well as equitable access to transportation.

Encompassing both private and public spheres, conference panels examined wide-ranging topics, including automated enforcement and the infrastructure required for operating electrified fleets. It also examined tech-driven pathways of pricing and congestion management, given an “intensifying battle for the curb.”

A major concern is that extremely limited areas of NYC streets and sidewalks must accommodate multifaceted use scenarios, including layovers, mobility hubs, and EV charging stations. The aim is to redefine the city’s transit landscape at a post-pandemic inflection point when rational, far-reaching change is possible.
